Puppet Theater
Check out this adorable little tabletop puppet theater I got at a garage sale last fall. It needed some fixing up (it was missing some screws). Tom took care of it for me and I think the kids are going to have a blast with it today!

Re-using Parmesan Cheese Containers
One effective way to save money and "reduce, reuse, recycle" is to find new uses for stuff rather than throwing it away. For years, I have been using Parmesan cheese containers to make cinnamon sugar shakers. I don't measure the sugar or the cinnamon, I just put some of each in (easy on the cinnamon at first, easier to add more than take out. LOL) and shake it up. I have also used them when I made my own taco seasoning. Just be sure and mark it well. I'll never forget the time I accidentally dumped some cinnamon sugar in my taco meat. HA!

Book review: Penny Pinching Mama: 500 ways I lived on $500 a month
Living on a Dime generously sent me two books to review. They came in the mail yesterday and I sat down and read one of them all the way through last night! It was Penny Pinching Mama: 500 ways I lived on $500 a month.
What an awesome and inspiring book. In it, Jill Cooper tells how she was able to pay off $35,000 debt in 5 years on $12,000 a year income. During that time, she lived on $5,000 a year and put the rest toward debt. Later, she became disabled and got $500 a month from disability and took care of her two children and herself on that income. Some of the advice she shares:
1. Barter for services when possible. For example, Jill traded ironing for haircuts for her daughter.
2. Learn to fix things for yourself. Especially now with the internet, one can learn to fix about anything simply by doing an internet search. Don't have internet? Check at your local library! This made me think about how Tom fixed our washing machine last summer. He felt so good about himself after he fixed it. Being able to fix stuff yourself can be a great feeling!
3. Jill studied nutrition information and found out what they needed to have a healthy and balanced diet and that's what they ate. She feels they were healthier then than at any other point in their life.
4. If something breaks or you are out of something and you don't have the money right then to fix it or get more, figure out a way to live without it.
5. There are lots of free things to do for fun, Jill lists several in her book. Go to the library, have a picnic, and read a book are just a few. This reminded me of when Tom and I were a young married couple with 3 small children. Going out on dates meant paying a babysitter as well as paying for the date. We sometimes traded child care with another family and one of our most memorable Valentine's Day dates was spending the evening at home, eating Lean Pockets and watching TV together.
There is a lot more in the book and if you like to read, I highly recommend buying or borrowing this book!
The other book I received is Dig out of Debt, I can't wait to get started on it!

Crockpot Lasagna Recipe
I got this recipe from a friend years ago. I hadn't made it in a while, and made it for supper last night. Oh my goodness, I forgot how good it is!
Slow cooker lasagna recipe:
1 lb ground beef
1 (26 to 28 oz) jar tomato pasta sauce
1 (8 oz) can no-salt-added tomato sauce
1/2 (9oz) pkg (about 8) no-boil lasagna noodles
1 (1-lb) jar Alfredo pasta sauce
12 oz (3 cups) shredded mozzarella cheese
Parmesan cheese to sprinkle on top (optional)
1. brown ground beef; drain
2. spray 4 to 5 quart slow cooker with nonstick spray...spread 3/4 cup
of the tomato pasta sauce in bottom of cooker; stir remaining
tomato pasta sauce and tomato sauce into the ground beef
3. layer 3 lasagna noodles over sauce in slow cooker, breaking
noodles as necessary...top with 1/3 of the Alfredo sauce, spreading
evenly; sprinkle with one cup of the mozzarella cheese. Top with
1/3 of the ground beef mixture, spreading evenly.
4. repeat layering twice, using 2 lasagna noodles in last layer; sprinkle
with Parmesan cheese, if desired.
5. cover; cook on low setting for 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 hours.
6. Towards the end, I sprinkled some more shredded cheese on the top.

Foaming Hand Soap
Did you know that if you get a great deal on bottles of foaming hand soap that you can save that bottle when it is empty and make your own foaming hand soap?
Step 1: Fill the bottle about 2/3 full of water.
Step 2: Pour some plain liquid hand soap in the bottle (leaving enough room in the bottle to be able to shake it up to mix it)
Step 3: Shake well and use!

Crockpot Chicken & Stuffing
In honor of the great deals I got on chicken last week, I thought I would post some of my favorite chicken recipes.
Crockpot chicken & stuffing:
1 package boneless, skinless chicken
1 box stuffing mix
1 can cream of mushroom (or celery or chicken) soup. You can also use the reduced fat soups to cut down on the calories. This was actually a recipe that I found when we were doing Weight Watchers several years ago.
1/2 cup water
Spray slow cooker with cooking spray. Put the chicken in the bottom, pour the box of stuffing mix over it, and then mix the soup and water together and pour over the top of it. I usually start this around lunchtime and it's done in plenty of time for supper. If you want to cook it on low heat, I suggest starting it out on high for at least a little while to get it cooking really well before turning it down.
When I made this last week, I used some Betty Crocker stuffing that I got back in November with a coupon. Can't remember how much I paid for it, but I think it was around 39 cents. I believe it was on sale for 89 cents and I had a 50 cent off coupon. Tasted just as good as the Stove Top stuffing!

Great chicken deal yesterday
Yesterday, I was doing my normal shopping in Aldi's and found a great deal on chicken. They had all their boneless chicken packages for $2 off and all their bone-in marked $1 off. I got a bunch of the bone-in for less than $1 a package! And some boneless for less than $2 a package! I should be good on chicken for a while!
A key to saving money is to keep an eye out for these kinds of markdowns and stock up on them when you can. It is also nice if you share it with your friends who might be interested so they can go stock up, if possible. I texted some friends after I got out to my car to let them know so they could take advantage of the sale if they wanted to.

Living on a Dime
Today I want to talk to you about the Living on a Dime website and their cookbook Dining on a Dime. I've been a fan of Tawra Kellam and her mom Jill Cooper for years, since I bought the original version of their cookbook Not Just Beans (now called Dining on a Dime). Over the years, I've bought and given many copies of the cookbooks as gifts or as door prizes.
Know how you can tell a good cookbook? By how it looks! Cookbooks with clean, perfect pages rarely get used. Cookbooks with smudges, crumbs, stains, etc. are frequently used and well-loved.
My favorite thing about the Dining on a Dime cookbook? The recipes are real recipes with real ingredients that can be found in most pantries or at least at the grocery store. Nothing annoys me more than a recipe with some weird ingredient that noone has ever heard of. The recipes are simple with easy to follow directions.
Right now, Living on a Dime is having a big sale (through Friday, January 20th). Check it out here!

What I like about coupons
For the last few days, I've been thinking about how much I like coupons. Our dishwasher quit and so now I'm having to wash dishes by hand. We have plenty of free and cheap Dawn dish washing liquid that I've bought from couponing the last few months so I do not have to worry about that for a while. I was sick with a stomach bug last week and we had plenty of chicken noodle soup,I didn't have to send anyone to the store to get me any. I have been able to help my kids in some small ways by sharing some of the bargains with them.
I am by no means an expert and I know I miss good bargains all the time. But I enjoy looking for them and sharing with people what I do find. Please remember to come here and share your good bargains! We love hearing about them.
And if you haven't yet, go like my new Facebook page. When I get to 50 likes, I'm giving away a coupon binder!
